Chennai Super Kings have signed South Africa’s promising batter Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of IPL 2025. With an overseas slot still open in their lineup, CSK were able to secure the services of the young South African. Brevis, who entered last year’s auction with a base price of INR 75 Lakh, has now been signed by CSK for INR 2.2 crore.
Brevis has played in 81 T20 matches, maintaining a strike rate close to 145. He was previously part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the last season of the league. Across two IPL campaigns (2022-2024), he appeared in 10 matches for MI amassing 230 runs at an average of 23.00. CSK used their official handle on X (formerly Twitter) to reveal their second replacement signing for the 18th edition of the IPL.
CSK called him up after his impressive performances for the Titans where he scored consistently in both List A and first-class games. He was also in great form during the SA20 earlier this year.
Earlier CSK suffered a major setback as their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow fracture. Following the injury blow, CSK reappointed MS Dhoni as their captain. CSK are currently 10th in the IPL 2025 points table having won only two of their seven matches.
CSK Qualification Scenarios: Can Chennai Super Kings Still Qualify for the Playoffs?
Scenario | Matches CSK Must Win | Points at End | Chances to Qualify | Why It Matters |
---|---|---|---|---|
Win all 7 matches | 7 out of 7 | 14 | Very High | 14 points will almost certainly get CSK into the playoffs. |
Win 6 matches | 6 out of 7 | 12 | Possible | 12 points might not be enough, depending on NRR and other teams’ results. |
Win 5 matches | 5 out of 7 | 10 | Unlikely | 10 points would leave CSK with slim chances; NRR would need to be exceptional, plus favorable results elsewhere. |
Win 4 or fewer | ≤4 | ≤8 | Very Low | With fewer than 10 points, CSK’s chances are almost gone, and qualification is unlikely. |
