The International Olympic Committee has finally revealed the venues for Cricket’s historic Olympics return at Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The Fairgrounds in Pomona, Southern California will host cricket at the 2028 Olympics. The popular sport will be making a momentary return after 128 years.
On April 9, the IOC Executive Board confirmed the format and team quotas for cricket at the LA28 Olympics. Both men’s and women’s tournaments will be played in the T20 format with six teams each. Each country can have a squad of up to 15 players with a total of 90 players per gender. The full match schedule is yet to be announced and will be finalized closer to the event.
Reacting to the venue announcement, ICC Chair Jay Shah shared his excitement about cricket’s return to the Olympics.
“We welcome the announcement of the venue for cricket at Los Angeles 2028 as it is a significant step towards the preparation for our sport’s return to the Olympics. Although cricket is a hugely popular sport, it will be a fantastic opportunity to expand traditional boundaries when it features in the Olympics in the fast-paced, exciting T20 format that should appeal to new audiences. On behalf of the ICC, I want to express my gratitude to LA28 and the International Olympic Committee for their support and look forward to collaborating with them and ICC Members in preparing for LA28 and making cricket a huge success there.” Jay Shah said.

India and New Zealand Enter LA 2028 as T20 World Champions
Cricket’s return to the Olympics was officially confirmed in October 2023. It will be featured alongside five other sports added to the LA28 program — baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash. The ICC (International Cricket Council) has 12 full member nations, including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe.
Cricket, especially in the T20 format has already made its mark in multi-sport events. It was part of the Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2023, and the women’s T20 format debuted at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. With the countdown to LA28 underway cricket fans worldwide are excited for what could be a historic and game-changing moment for the sport on the Olympic stage.
As we look ahead to LA 2028, India’s men’s team and New Zealand’s women’s team will enter as the reigning T20 world champions. India, led by Rohit Sharma clinched the men’s title, while the White Ferns, captained by Sophie Devine took home the women’s crown.
