The BCCI has once again pushed back the announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming tour of England. It was first expected by May 20, as mentioned by BCCI Secretary De vajit Saikia. Then the date shifted to May 23, but now, reports suggest the squad won’t be revealed until the last week of May.
According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI had to delay naming India’s squad for the England tour because of the IPL 2025 restart. Ever since May 8, most of the attention has been on getting the tournament up and running again. Now that it’s resumed, a lot of time and effort went into finalizing the venues and schedule, which pushed the squad announcement down the list.
And it wasn’t just the IPL keeping the BCCI busy. They were also working on finalizing the India ‘A’ squad, which was announced just yesterday. On top of that, the board now has to find replacements for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who both retired during the IPL break, and also name India’s next Test captain. None of these are simple calls, which explains the delay.
One thing that’s confirmed is that Team India will fly out to England on June 6. The only exceptions are Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, who’ll already be there as part of the India A squad for their second practice match against the England Lions, starting the same day in Northampton. Gautam Gambhir will also travel with the team — earlier reports suggested he might leave earlier, but that’s no longer the case. For the India A side, Hrishikesh Kanitkar is the head coach, with Subhodeep Ghosh as fielding coach and Troy Cooley handling bowling duties.
