Kolkata Knight Riders badly beat Chennai Super Kings at their home ground in Chepauk on Friday, April 11. MS Dhoni, who returned as captain, couldn’t turn things around for his team. Even though his dismissal was surrounded by controversy, that did not stop Virender Sehwag from taking a sharp dig at the batter once again.
Sehwag Questions Dhoni’s Impact and CSK’s Batting Performance
While talking on Star Sports after the match, Sehwag said that Dhoni getting out didn’t affect the game because he bats too low in the order to make a big difference. He also wasn’t happy with CSK’s batting performance in the IPL and felt they needed to improve their batting line-up.
“I doubt CSK would have won even if MS Dhoni had batted. How many would they have scored? 120? How many overs did KKR chase the target in? 10.2? We would have come live at 11:30 PM, that’s about it,” Sehwag said.
MS Dhoni got out in the 16th over during the match against KKR. He faced just 4 balls and managed to score only 1 run before Sunil Narine got him out. As soon as the umpire gave him out, Dhoni quickly went for a DRS review. There was a small noise when the ball passed the bat, but the replays clearly showed there was a gap between the bat and the ball.
The third umpire said there wasn’t clear proof to change the on-field umpire’s call, so he gave MS Dhoni out.
Aakash Chopra and Virender Sehwag talked about it after the match during the Hindi broadcast and supported the umpire’s decision.
CSK coach Stephen Fleming stepped out of the dugout and had a word with umpire Chris Gaffaney during the strategic timeout after the decision was made.
Bangar Criticizes Third Umpire’s Decision
Former cricketer Sanjay Bangar wasn’t fully convinced. While talking on ESPNcricinfo, he said it seemed like the third umpire wasn’t very sure when making the decision.
“Listening to the directions of the DRS (third) umpire, he seemed very, very underconfident. He wasn’t really sure because when he was wanting to see the ball at a particular time, he was saying ‘forward’ when he wanted to get it back. So clearly he was also under a little bit of indecisiveness, if that’s the right word. But there was something on the UltraEdge, it did pick up something,” Bangar said.
After their 5th loss in a row, CSK have 2 points from 6 games. They are placed in the 9th position on the league table, one place above Sunrisers Hyderabad.
