Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has been fined by the BCCI for maintaining a slow over-rate during their recent match against Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede Stadium. The penalty came after MI’s narrow three-wicket loss in that IPL 2025 clash.
Mumbai Indians found themselves in trouble for not finishing their overs on time while defending a DLS-adjusted target of 147. Because of the slow over-rate, they had to go into the final over with just four fielders outside the circle a big disadvantage, especially with Gujarat Titans needing 15 runs to win. That one slip-up proved costly, as GT made the most of it and clinched a thrilling victory.
Hardik Pandya has been slapped with a fine of ₹24 lakh for his team’s slow over-rate against Gujarat Titans. The rest of the Mumbai Indians playing XI, including the impact player, were also fined — either ₹6 lakh each or 25% of their match fees, whichever was lower.
Ashish Nehra Penalised for Code of Conduct Breach
In a separate incident, Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra was fined 25% of his match fees and given one demerit point. He admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with actions that go against the spirit of the game. Nehra accepted the Match Referee’s decision without contest.
Coming back to the match, Gujarat Titans beat Mumbai Indians by three wickets using the DLS method in a rain-affected clash at the Wankhede Stadium. Light rain began early in the second innings and picked up around the 14th over, causing the first stoppage. Showers returned again after the 18th over, just when GT needed 24 runs from the final 12 balls. Even though they were ahead of the DLS par score for most of the chase, they slipped five runs behind when the game was paused again.
Still, GT kept their cool and chased down the revised target in the final over to seal the win. The victory pushed them to the top of the points table. Mumbai Indians, now sitting fourth, will hope to bounce back in their next game against Punjab Kings on May 11 in Dharamshala.

Qualification Scenario | Mumbai Indians must win at least one of their remaining matches, with two wins almost guaranteeing their spot in the playoffs. The loss against GT has made things tougher, as they now need to win against either PBKS or DC. Losing both matches would knock them out. A loss to DC, in particular, could be disastrous, leaving MI with minimal chances. |
