In a big setback for Punjab Kings, star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out for the rest of the IPL 2025 season. The news came shortly after PBKS four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings on April 30 at Chepauk a match Maxwell missed. He’s been sidelined with a finger fracture bringing his season to an early end.
Glenn Maxwell had a tough time with the bat this season, managing just 48 runs in six innings and failing to get into double digits in his last four outings. While his batting didn’t quite click, he did chip in with the ball picking up four wickets with his off-spin. Maxwell was picked up by Punjab Kings for ₹4.2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Punjab Kings have now been hit with a second major injury blow this season. After losing Lockie Ferguson earlier in the month due to a serious injury, Glenn Maxwell has also been ruled out with a finger fracture. PBKS haven’t yet named a replacement for Ferguson, but head coach Ricky Ponting said they’ll address that soon.

PBKS Playoff Qualification Scenario: What They Need to Do
Despite the setbacks, PBKS are still going strong. They currently sit in second place on the points table, just behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings have become the first team to be officially knocked out of the playoff race.
Punjab Kings are in a good spot as the league stage nears its end. They have 13 points in the bank and just two more victories from their remaining four matches would assure them of a playoff spot. Three of those games are to be played in Dharamsala, which may be advantageous.
Right now, PBKS are second on the points table with a net run rate of +0.270. If they can win a couple of games by good margins, they might even finish in the top two. That would give them an extra chance to reach the final by playing in Qualifier 1.
